BIMO Toolbar can check for a newer stable release and download the update directly from Revit. You can also update manually with the latest universal MSI.
Check for updates in Revit
Open the BIMO ribbon tab.
Run About BIMO.
Wait for the automatic version check to finish.
The window shows:
the currently installed version;
the latest available stable version;
whether the installed version is up to date.
The check runs when the About BIMO page is opened. The current implementation does not silently install updates on every Revit startup and does not offer prerelease builds to users.
The version check requires access to bimo.tools. When the service or network connection is unavailable, the window displays a warning and you can try again later.
Update from Revit
When a newer version is available:
Select Update.
Keep the About BIMO window open while the file is downloading. Leaving the page cancels the current download.
Wait for the Update downloaded message.
Save every open Revit project.
Close all running Autodesk Revit instances.
After the download, BIMO starts a separate updater process. It:
waits for the Revit instance that started the update to exit;
also waits until every other Revit process is closed;
installs the MSI in silent mode;
removes the downloaded temporary installer after completion.
Installation does not begin while any Revit process remains open. The updater does not force Revit to close and does not save your projects.
After installation finishes, start Revit manually and verify the version through About BIMO when needed.
Manual update
Use a manual update when in-product downloading is unavailable or blocked by company policy:
Download the latest
BimoInstaller-Universal.msifrom the official BIMO website.Close every Revit version.
Run the MSI and complete the installation.
Start Revit and check the BIMO tab.
The universal installer updates the shared BIMO.bundle for supported Revit versions 2021 through 2027. A normal update does not require uninstalling the previous release first.
If Windows shows Unknown publisher or Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, follow the security guidance in the installation guide. Do not disable Windows protection or antivirus software globally.
Data preserved during updates
A normal update replaces application files but should not remove user data stored outside the bundle:
This includes settings, presets, license data, and cached branding. Logs are also stored separately:
When migrating from the legacy installation format, the universal MSI removes old BIMO manifests and add-in folders from %APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Addins\2020-2027 without removing the user data listed above.
The update does not install
Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
The version check fails | Check the internet connection and access to |
The download was canceled | Keep the window open and stay on the About BIMO page until the download completes. |
Nothing happens after closing the current Revit | Close every Revit process, including other versions and stalled instances shown in Task Manager. |
The download reports an error | Select Try Update Again or perform a manual update. |
The installer is blocked by company policy | Give the official MSI to your system administrator; do not bypass organization security rules yourself. |
An older version cannot replace a newer one | A later BIMO release may already be installed. Confirm that a rollback is necessary and uninstall the newer version through Windows first. |
The BIMO tab is missing after the update | Restart Revit, check |
Update recommendations
Always save models before closing Revit.
Update BIMO only through the built-in window or the official website.
In managed company environments, validate a new release on a test workstation before wider deployment.
Use the Release notes link in About BIMO to review changes.
When the problem continues, send the error description and logs from the logs folder to BIMO support. Do not attach license.json.
